Leading Mentorship for New Teachers | July 2–4, 2014
The BC New Teacher Mentoring Project, in partnership with the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Education, hosted a Summer Institute on “Leading Mentorship for New Teachers” on the beautiful UBC Vancouver campus July 2–4, 2014.
The Institute brought together 40 mentor leaders from across British Columbia to build a professional community of mentor leaders and advocates committed to the development and facilitation of effective mentoring practice. The Institute provided opportunities to learn, dialogue, share models of mentorship, and explore new possibilities across the diverse programs that have emerged in BC.
Key presenters at the Institute included Laura Servage (U of Alberta principal researcher for the ATA Longitudinal study: Teaching in the Early Years of Practice), Anne Phelan (UBC Faculty of Education, Professional Learning and Teacher Inquiry), and Linda Farr Darling (UBC Eleanor Rix Professor of Rural Teacher Education). Co-facilitators for the conference were Alison Davies (New Teacher Mentoring Project Co-ordinator) and Nancy Hinds (Consultant).
School Districts/locals were invited to nominate up to two participants to attend the conference. These individuals were current or emerging mentor leaders committed to ongoing leadership and professional development in induction and early career teacher mentoring practices.
