Advisory Committee

glen_hansman_bio_pictureGlen Hansman —President, BC Teachers’ Federation

Glen Hansman is an elementary school teacher with the Vancouver School Board, and is currently the president of the BC Teachers’ Federation. Mr. Hansman is a former President of the Vancouver Elementary School Teachers’ Association, and was the Vancouver School Board’s Antihomophobia & Diversity Consultant and has taught primarily in special education contexts. He is the co-chair of the K-12 Aboriginal Education Partners, and is a member of the BC Federation of Labour Executive Council. Mr. Hansman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University, a Bachelor of Education degree from McGill University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia. He also recently served on the board of the Teachers Qualification Service, and is a current member of the BC Teachers Council

 

 


Dr. Wendy Carr — Associate Dean of Teacher Education, UBC

Wendy is a Professor of Teaching in Language & Literacy Education, former teacher in Coquitlam and district French helping teacher/consultant in Surrey and Vancouver. She coordinated and instructed in UBC’s French teacher education programs for many years and now oversees the Teacher Education Program as Associate Dean. During her teaching career, she was a BCTF provincial specialist association president and vice-president of the Canadian Assn of Second Language Teachers. She has been an active provider of professional learning opportunities and resources for inservice educators during most of her career and continues to dedicate herself to teacher education at all levels.

 

 

 

 

Chris StewartChristine Stewart — Director, Professional and Social Issues Division, BC Teachers’ Federation

Christine Stewart / Galksi-Gibaykwhl Sook’ is a member of the Nisga’a Nation and was the counselor for Britannia Secondary School. Previously, Ms. Stewart was an Assistant Director on the staff of the BC Teachers’ Federation, with the responsibility for overseeing Aboriginal programs. Active in her community, Ms. Stewart has been a Member-at-Large on the BCTF Executive Committee, as well as on her Vancouver Secondary Teachers’ Association local executive. She currently serves as a Board Member with the Tsamiks Society. Ms. Stewart holds a BA and MA from Simon Fraser University.

 

 

 

Dianne TurnerDianne Turner — Chief Educator, BC Ministry of Education

Dianne has been a Science Teacher, Department Head since 1979, Vice-Principal and Principal in the Vancouver School District since 1992, and Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent in the Delta School District since 2008. She has been dedicated to professional learning and mentorship throughout each of these roles, and is committed to supporting educators as they build their professional capacity throughout their careers.

 

 

 

 

Shawna FaberShawna Faber — NTMP Program Evaluation

Shawna’s interests and experience as a classroom teacher, university instructor and researcher at UBC (in program design, delivery and evaluation) contribute to this very important project. Shawna’s primary role in the NTMP is conducting the evaluation (both formative and summative) to highlight strengths and to help direct program improvements.

Alison Davies

Alison Davies — Co-ordinator, New Teacher Mentoring Project

Alison is an elementary teacher from the Sunshine Coast School District. Her two interests of mentorship and teacher inquiry were developed through her years of work as a Faculty Associate with Field Programs at SFU. Alison understands mentorship as a core process of teacher professionalism, and is committed to developing systemic supports for new teachers across the province.

In addition to her role as Technology Coordinator for the NTMP, Tashi is the Coordinator of Teacher Mentorship for the Delta School District.  She is passionate about building communities of learning for all teachers and grounding the practice of mentorship in wise teaching practice and student learning.

 

 

 

 

 

Project Researchers

Dr. Rita L. IrwinRita Irwin — Lead Researcher, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, UBC

Rita L. Irwin is Professor of Art Education and Curriculum Studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.   She was a classroom teacher and arts specialist before embarking upon an academic career. While her research interests include teacher education, curriculum practices, and socio-cultural issues, she is best known for her work in expanding how we might imagine and conduct practice based research methodologies through collaborative and community based collectives.

 

 

 

Ching-Chiu LinChing-Chiu Lin — Research Fellow, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, UBC

Ching-Chiu Lin is a Research Fellow in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia. She is also a Faculty Advisor in the Teacher Education Office supervising student teaching in visual art cohorts. Lin’s research interests lie in teacher mentorship, as well as issues of technology and community in visual art education.

 

 

 

 

Consultation and Facilitation

Nancy HindsNancy Hinds — Leadership and Facilitation Coach

Nancy is an educational consultant who is passionate about the power of facilitative leadership, mentorship and inquiry as pillars of personal and community growth. She has worked with a wide-range of groups both nationally and internationally, and is currently an associate instructor with the Masterful Facilitation Institute. Building on her experience gained as an early childhood teacher, teacher educator, conflict resolution coach, and professional staff person with the BC Teachers’ Federation, Nancy continues to work with BC school districts on system-wide learning initiatives.
